Curtis Pride, a former major league baseball player, who played with the Expos, Tigers, Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, and Angels, was diagnosed at nine months of age as being profoundly deaf at birth. Mainstreamed throughout school, he graduated from John F. Kennedy High School, Silver Spring, with a 3.76 GPA and enjoyed an outstanding high school athletic career. A graduate of the College of William & Mary, Curtis became the first regular full-season deaf player in the modern history of major league baseball in 1996. Now Head Baseball Coach at Gallaudet University, he has proven again and again that "it's ability that counts!" Join us to hear his incredible story of talent, ability, and determination that resulted in a successful sports career and multiple honors, including being selected by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as one of the nation's ten outstanding Young Americans and by the Baseball Writers Association to receive the Tony Conigliaro Award, presented annually to a major league player who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, courage, and determination.
